Silkroad Online is a Free-to-Play MMORPG created by a South Korean company, Joymax. The game was released in South Korea to serve the majority of the players as well as serving international players. The background is based on the historical Silk Road. The trade route between China and the rest of the world was turned into a historic/fantasy environment where players can choose to play as merchants, hunters or thieves. Players engage in activities such as completing quest missions, killing monsters and exploration of the world. One unique aspect of the game is the triangular system between the three classes. Thieves steal from merchants, merchants hires hunters for protection and hunters arrest thieves for rewards. The game was first released in November 2005 and is still running today.

Silkroad Online Gold is the official currency for the game. Players trade with each others exchanging items for SRO Gold. Gold is obtained by killing monsters, completing missions and trading. The trader class is especially capable of making massive amounts of SRO Gold by trading. They travel from city to city, carrying valuable items with them. Arriving safely at the destination, they set up stalls and networks to trade items with other players. The thieves, however, have different means of making SRO Gold. They steal from traders and sell the items for profits at the Black Market. Either way, Silkroad Online Gold is still the common currency in cities and black markets. Rare items are highly sought after and players are willing to pay enormous amount of SRO Gold for them. Various exploits and strategies are used to make more gold but an alternative is to purchase SRO Gold from virtual currency shops.
